Psychoanalysis: Not What You Think, More Than You Can Imagine
Psychoanalytic theory is a major contributor to the foundations of psychology, and many of its tenets are incorporated into twenty-first century study and treatment of extreme emotional suffering. But psychoanalysis is widely misunderstood. This is an exciting time for psychoanalysis, as “neuroscience objectively confirms much of what Freud believed about the mysterious workings of the unconscious (Dennis, 2017).”
This series asks the clinical questions: What are we trying to accomplish in psychoanalytic treatment, and what gets in the way? Each topic includes research-based theory that informs innovative techniques. These techniques are effective in addressing the difficulties of meaningful and lasting change.
The seminars have much for the experienced clinician, as well as for the person new to the field.
Session II
First Problem: Once People Begin, They Want to Get Away
Beginning any type of psychological treatment can arouse conscious and unconscious fears of what might be uncovered. These fears are often manifested in simple behaviors such as tardiness, missed appointments or unpaid fees. This presentation explores the ways these and other behaviors can threaten treatment and offers interventions to address the problems. Clinicians are invited to bring their cases to discuss.
Presenter:
William Sharp, Cert. Psya, Psya.D. is a psychoanalyst and assistant teaching professor at Northeastern University in Boston. He is on faculty of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis where he is the program director of the Masters in Counseling program. He maintains a private practice in Brookline, MA. He is a much sought-after public speaker and has numerous publications on a variety of psychoanalytic topics, including a book on evidence-based approaches to psychoanalytic counseling.
Continuing Education Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Define and list treatment-destructive resistances
- State when to join and when not to join a patient's-treatment destructive resistance
- Explain why joining works in the resolution of resistances to progressive communication
